Over time her brother began to become very ill and it was with great difficulty that he continued to drive the truck for the family business. Eve wished she could step in and carry on so her brother could rest, but she lacked the skills and training. Her father had told her that he was glad she wanted to drive, because the time would come when he would need her to drive or they would in fact lose their family business.
One day her father called her in to his office in a small room in their home. He told her that soon she would be able to drive and that he was going to begin instructing her in all the aspect of truck driving necessary for her to become licensed and to handle the truck safely. He took out a set of keys to their truck, hung them on the wall, and told Eve that he wanted her to focus on them as a motivation to learn, but that she was never to touch or use them until after her training was complete....because when she began to drive, there would be many dangers. He then told her he had to go away for season on a business trip, but that when he returned he would give her more instructions and complete her training.
It happened that while the father was gone, Eve’s brother became gravely ill and was no longer able to drive. Eve recognized immediately that if she was to save the business she would have to start driving and soon. Yet she remembered her Father’s caution about doing so before she was trained. She began to feel the burden of not being able to fulfill both of her father’s desires for her at the same time.
One day a warehouse owner for whom the family had done much hauling came to visit Eve. For his own selfish reasons he told her of the need for her to start diving immediately, and when she protested about her father’s warning, he explained to her that her Father’s concerns were over stated, that there was no real danger in her taking over the driving that very day, and he urged her, claiming that there simply was no other way to save their family business. In the absence of her Father, Eve believed the warehouse owner, ran to the office, plucked the keys of the wall, and went out to attempt to drive the family truck.
Upon his return from his business trip the Eli found that Eve had been arrested, and the family truck impounded. When he questioned why she could not have been patient, she tearfully explained that she had been deceived by the warehouse owner into thinking it was the only way to save their family business. With love and tender mercy Eve’s father paid the fines, freed the family truck from impoundment, and then set up a probationary training period for Eve to learn the skills and acquire the licenses she lacked.
