Too many self-proclaimed historians, in an attempt to gain influence, and acceptance by the worldly academia, will sacrifice their integrity, set aside revelation, disregard the Holy Spirit and approach research in the worlds way….which is to decide what they want to be true, and then look for snippets of records and history to support their thesis thereby building some new, shocking, fascinating, expository “facts” based on contextually challenged sources.
Researching in that way leads to a type of historical schizophrenia. For example, historians who cite Emma Smith’s comments as proof that Joseph used a seer stone, but then reject Emma’s claim that Joseph never practiced polygamy…. which was made in the very same document, by the very same person, at the very same time? In essence their flawed position is that only Emma’s comments that support their views are credible, while those that do not support their views are not credible. I am so thankful for revealed truth from a flawless source. I am thankful for the counsel of President Nelson “If we are to have any hope of sifting through the myriad of voices and the philosophies of men that attack truth, we must learn to receive revelation.” God has revealed to me by His Holy Spirit that John Taylor’s description of Joseph Smith is absolutely true. Thus… any spurious or revisionist histories, misleading journal entries, biased news sources, testimonies and affidavits of traitors, or any other human based perceptions which contradict that truth may be comfortably discarded as false.
In a world that has produced so many flesh reliant historians, envious enemies, jealous contemporaries, agenda driven reporters…it is nice to know that the God of heaven, though revelation, will make clear His absolute truths with regard to Joseph Smith, in relation to plural marriage, money digging, seer stones, or any other questions arising from our narcissistic and arrogant society with it prophesied propensity to call……. Good Evil and Evil Good. As we move into our study of the turbulent times in Nauvoo, it is wise to keep in mind the difference between revealed truth, and flawed human perceptions. |
