When we come to truly love God will all our souls, our motivation naturally becomes others centered, our actions, obedience and worship move from being about what they can bring to us, to being ways which we can use to please the God we love. This intense focus on someone other than ourselves, starves our natural tendency to narcissism, until it withers and dies. Most of us are on a continuum of moving from self-centered actions to God centered ones, the "Where is my heart's focus" chart might help with assessing where we truly are.
If we are somewhere short of loving God with all our soul, heart, mind and strength, there are a few things that can help us move forward.
1. Charity. Moroni 7: 45-48. The pure love of Christ is a gift from God to those who earnestly seek it. It wasn’t until recently that I realized that being filled with the love of Christ is not just about how we see and care for other humans, it is also about how we see and care for the Father, who Jesus loved perfectly.
2. We can strive harder to get to know the Father as He really is, to recognize his dealing in our life. One of the great blessings of my life was to spend a year reviewing the scriptures, church history, temple ordinances, etc. looking for the presence, the voice, the tenderness, of Elohim. What I found amazed me and filled me with reverence and love. Here are some starting points.
