That is so because in the process of apostasy the apostate seeks to become the source of truth as opposed to learning the truth from God. That in turn requires us to enter into the ultimate form of forum shopping where we exercise our bias to the point of accepting as truth any and all sources (forums) that agree with our preconceived notions and pre-determined "truth." Of course, the inseparable corollary then is the rejecting of forums, (sources) that reveal one’s flesh based and personally adopted truths, to be the weak and worthless philosophies they really are.
The Lord in his wisdom has appointed divine sources of truth as guides, helps for his children, who face a barrage of the philosophies of men, some even mingled with scripture, which are of no eternal worth and can be of great eternal harm. These divinely appointed sources are:
1. Personal revelation from God by His Holy Spirit
2. The Holy Scriptures, when read, interpreted and understood by the Holy Spirit.
3. Inspired and righteous church leaders who counsel within their stewardships and under the direction of the Holy Spirit.
4. Godly parents, whose loving counsel is given under the influence of the Holy Ghost.
5. Patriarchal Blessings, when read and understood with the assistance of the Holy Spirit.
There is a reason the Holy Spirit is an essential ingredient the runs through all of those divinely appointed sources. It is the only thing that protects us from the faults and destruction which comes by reliance on the arm of the flesh. It is also an inescapable fact, that if we want to forum shop we must first either cast aside the Holy Spirit or render its influence to be of no effect in our lives, thus it is the antidote to forum shopping.
So how does Satan build his walls between the soul and those divinely appointed sources that would save them from apostasy? In every case he appeals to pride and arrogance, the underlying assumption being that the individual knows more and better than everyone else:
For example..... when it comes to rejecting the inspired teachings of the church Leaders the Prophet Joseph taught; “I will give you one of the Keys of the mysteries of the Kingdom. It is an eternal principle, that has existed with God from all eternity: That man who rises up to condemn others, finding fault with the Church, saying that they are out of the way, while he himself is righteous, then know assuredly, that that man is in the high road to apostasy; and if he does not repent, will apostatize, as God lives.”
The antidote to this wall is based in looking for the good in others, allowing the spirit to be our guide, granting grace and compassion to our leaders in the same spirit that God grants grace and compassion to us. We can embrace that truth taught to us by a perfect and loving God..."And whatsoever they shall speak when moved upon by the Holy Ghost shall be scripture, shall be the will of the Lord, shall be the mind of the Lord, shall be the word of the Lord, shall be the voice of the Lord, and the power of God unto salvation.” D&C 68:4
In the area of Patriarchal blessings, Satan will help us to be too busy or distracted to read it. Then as doubts and fear increase in our lives, he will lie to the recipient telling them that there is no validity to it, that the feelings and experiences surrounding it were the imaginations of a childish soul, or the result of some false memory syndrome. By building a wall between the person and the blessing dictated by God’s revelation, and darkening the truth testifying events that surrounded its receipt, Satan renders the blessings of no effect. The great wisdom in Satan’s plan is that he is using the truth that human reason is weak and unreliable, the very thing his philosophies rely upon for truth, to cast doubt upon a blessing of the past. The only antidote to such treachery, is to read the blessing often and in the Spirit, and to record and then revisit in one’s journal, the truth about those experiences that surrounded its both receipt and subsequent spirit lead reviews......
