Yet even with that challenge, the scriptures do on occasion try to describe the feeling.
Feeling the Words: (I Nephi 17:45) Because of their iniquity Laman and Lemuel could not understand the still small voice because they were past feeling. “ye have heard his voice from time to time; and he hath spoken unto you in a still small voice, but ye were past feeling, that ye could not feel his words; “
Road to Emmaus: (Luke 24:13-33) It is telling that while the physical sense (eyes) of the disciples where holden, in that they did not initially recognize Jesus, and after His actions in blessing the bread at the last revealed to them who he was, they then remembered and discussed how they had felt as he expounded the scriptures to them while they walked in the way. Their description of that spiritual feeling was thus; “did not our heart burn within us…”
Day of Pentecost: (Acts 2:1-37) On this significant day where the outpouring of the spirit was so powerful that some saw tongues of fire on the heads of the believers, followed by the physical manifestation of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the speaking in tongues. After the non-believers heard the Gospel, preached in their native tongues, and Peter expounded the meaning of those things in a classic discourse, the spirit settled in the hearts of those observers who as the scriptures described were “Pricked in their heart.” That pricking, convinced them of the truths he expounded and lead Peter to urge them to baptism, which they gladly accepted.
Survivors Gathered in the Land Bountiful: (3 Nephi 11:3) Just before Jesus descended to minster among the people in the Land Bountiful they heard a voice speaking to them and its feeling is described thus; “nevertheless, and notwithstanding it being a small voice it did pierce them that did hear to the center, insomuch that there was no part of their frame that it did not cause to quake; yea, it did pierce them to the very soul, and did cause their hearts to burn. Interestingly the “pricking” in the heart mentioned in Acts can also be translated “pierced.”
How Oliver was to know the Translation was Correct: (D&C 9:8) The Lord explains how Oliver would know truth in translation, and used these words; “behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.” It is important to note that to assist in correctly understanding the spirit’s meaning Oliver was instructed to study it out, and then to ask specially.
How the Saints Where to Know Where the Lord Would have them Tarry: (D & C 111:18) And the place where it is my will that you should tarry, for the main, shall be signalized unto you by the peace and power of my Spirit, that shall flow unto you. Indicating at times the spirit can be more than just peace, it is peace with power.
How the Spirit can Swell Within You: (Alma 32:28) behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves—It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.
Elder Nelsons Description of Revelation to the Twelve: (General Conference April 2018) “In our meetings, the majority never rules! We listen prayerfully to one another and talk with each other until we are united. Then when we have reached complete accord, the unifying influence of the Holy Ghost is spine-tingling!” ………..Exactly.
