There are some positives and negatives that come from the court's overreach.
Positive: It reinforces the fact that God is in control, that while the people of our nation may be surprised for good or evil about the actions of the court, God was neither surprised nor unprepared. In fact, through the prophet Isaiah the Lord long ago spoke of exactly that same conduct; " Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!"
The court's majority fit that description perfectly. They have in the wisdom of their own eyes, adopted the false conclusion that homosexual conduct is not immoral, but rather a status of being and thus deserving of civil rights, at least in federal programs. They have by their action decreed what is and always will be immoral....to be moral. They thus move from being interpreters of the law to becoming Law Givers and thereby fulfill Isaiah's prophecy.
Now for the negative: By imposing their erroneous view of morality upon the nation they set the precedence for doing the same with all other things society, and even God, have deemed to be immoral. If the court can, by their decrees, make homosexuality into a moral and protected status, contrary to the will of God and the people, then they definitely possess the power to do the same with other immorality. There is, absent the moral argument, no reason why the Supreme Court will not in a coming day feel free to declare "liberty" for children and animals, to set aside the "archaic" notions that age of consent, or ability to reason, are somehow important, and then provide such a protected status to the pedophile, or for those or advocate for bestiality.
True, currently those suppositions sound "over the top", as a majority of Americans, and probably even Supreme Court Justices, would still consider pedophilia or bestiality to be immoral. However, it was not too long ago that a majority of Americans and Supreme Court Justices considered homosexual conduct to be immoral and reprehensible. Today that majority is gone, and evil has been reclassified as good. So who is to say that the same thing cannot happen to any or every other immoral action, as our nation sinks into depravity.
The real scary part is the second half of Isaiah prophecy. The calling of good evil. The majority opinions do just that. They vilify those who take a moral stance on the issue and unjustly attribute evil, malice, and hatred to them. It is not hard to see future persecution and forced compliance, even prosecutions, emanating from such a court, against any who oppose their rulings, or take a moral stand contrary to that imposed upon them by the justices.
Interestingly, in response to the Courts overreach, the LDS church has issued this statement:
"Regardless of the court decision, the Church remains irrevocably committed to strengthening traditional marriage between a man and a woman, which for thousands of years has proven to be the best environment for nurturing children. Notably, the court decision does not change the definition of marriage in nearly three-fourths of the states."
Given that position juxtaposed to the angry majority opinion, it is not hard to see how it is that the following prophecy issued by Elder McConkie in that classic talk: "The Coming Tests and Trials and Glory", will be fulfilled when he said:
….Amid tears of sorrow—our hearts heavy with forebodings—we see evil and crime and carnality covering the earth. Liars and thieves and adulterers and homosexuals and murderers scarcely seek to hide their abominations from our view. Iniquity abounds. There is no peace on earth. We see evil forces everywhere uniting to destroy the family, to ridicule morality and decency, to glorify all that is lewd and base. We see wars and plagues and pestilence. Nations rise and fall. Blood and carnage and death are everywhere. Gadianton robbers fill the judgment seats in many nations. An evil power seeks to overthrow the freedom of all nations and countries. Satan reigns in the hearts of men; it is the great day of his power… The way ahead is dark and dreary and dreadful. There will yet be martyrs; the doors in Carthage shall again enclose the innocent. We have not been promised that the trials and evils of the world will entirely pass us by.
No, God is not surprised and neither should we be. Our duty is clear, to love God and to love his children enough to continue to stand for all that is TRULY moral, no matter the evil motives, or twisted characteristics the courts, governments, or societies may falsely attribute to us for doing so. In the end it helps to remember that the battle is NOT for nations or governments, it is NOT a tally of court cases won or lost, but it IS a battle for the individual souls of all human kind. We must love all men, and love them enough to stand for truth no matter the consequences. We must come to learn for ourselves how it is that Perfect Love, casts out all fear! Finally, we must hope that as in the early history of the church, "The Truth Will Prevail", if not with governments or societies, at least with individuals, our brothers and siters whom we must love enough to teach the truth.
