In my right-wing talk radio days I would often argue with those advocating for less restrictive or more humane immigration policies, that the issues was not about race, but about fairness. I was convinced that the liberal media was only claiming racism, because they did not want to discuss the real issue of fairness to all.
Trumps election and subsequent cruel treatment of those seeking asylum, supported by many who should have been open to loving their neighbors rather than harming them, opened my eyes to the truth. I realized that many arguing for fairness, were using it as a cover for their xenophobia.
Even Latter-day Saints, (whose leaders wrote a letter urging compassion toward asylum seekers and immigrants and speaking out against forced family separations), would still ignore that plea, and continue to support cruel treatment with a multitude of selfish justifications. I now see the sad truth and how wrong I had been before.
